Running the Penmachno Trails

Howdy doody folks.

Super smashing trail run today around the double loop that includes the Dolen Machno and the Dolen Eryri, a distance of, at least by my Suunto Ambit 3, 28.6 km or 17.7 miles. It’s generally an MTB trail, but if you come and run during the week or when it’s not a public holiday, I’ll be surprised if you see any bikers. I didn’t. In fact, I saw nobody apart from a couple of forestry contractors with their choppers out.

Here’s a little intro to the run today:

Instead of waffling on, I’ll post images from the run, with captions. I have not been able to edit them, so they are directly from my Galaxy S7, so some shots may have blown-out skies, highlights etc. I spend so much of my life editing photos, but sometimes I really can’t be buggered!

Lots of cool single track on these trails…

About to run down ‘Ffastis Dau’.

Beautiful views abound on clear days such as this πŸ™‚

A little ‘North Shore’

More awesome single track though the trees.

One of the many tight hair pins up and down the hillsides.

More ‘springy’ North Shore.

Dropping a little height takes me through mixed woodland instead of plantation.

“Who lives….in a house like this?” πŸ˜€

Boing, boing, boing. Honestly, it’s really fun and springy πŸ™‚

Admiring the view πŸ™‚

As I left the trees heading back west, the view opens out to the mountains of Northern Snowdonia, beautiful…

Want to run here yet? πŸ˜‰

Looking to Moel Siabod, 872m foreground and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), rear at 1,085m.

Another lovely, expansive view.

My Skechers Ultra Trail 3 are great for this kind of trail; like Hoka – super-plush but only good on lightly-technical trails due to their uber stack height. I turned my left ankle today, but not half as bad as I have done previously….

Enjoying a little break in Β the sun. I don’t run a long run to beast myself. I relax and just take it all in. No fun other wise πŸ™‚

Mae’n bendigedig πŸ™‚

Approaching the back of the cwm.

Fluffy cumulus means fair weather to come πŸ™‚

Back amongst the embrace of the trees.

Taking it all in…again. Just endless views.

Popping out of the trees again, I stopped to drink in the view and the sounds:

Quite possibly the most amusingly named section of single track. That and ‘Spwng’ πŸ˜€

Directly in front is the dis-used Rhiw Fachno slate quarry. I actually work in the mine, Rhiw Bach guiding customers underground for the excellentΒ Go Below Underground Adventures.

After sixteen miles, this long climb is pretty horrible but I refused to walk…grrrrr πŸ˜€

One last look into the beautiful enclosed valleyΒ of Cwm Penmachno, with quarry at left and the hill of Manod Mawr behind.

So there we go folks.

Another absolute cracker of a trail run. No denying it was hard, but definitely beautiful. Underground tomorrow, where I am sure my legs will protest at how physical my job is! But I love it, one of the best and most unique jobs a person can have πŸ™‚

If you want to check it out, here ya go:

Don’t forget I’m also a regular Instagram selfie-whore too πŸ˜€

Thanks for coming by today folks and I’ll catch you all on my next blog post.
